How do I obtain an amateur radio license? In order to obtain an amateur radio license, you are required to pass a test. Classes are offered throughout the Puget Sound area to provide training to obtain an amateur radio license and administer the test. If you pass, you will receive a certificate before you leave (you do have to wait approximately 10 days before receiving you call sign, though, from the FCC). The classes are usually over two days, are free, but require $15 to cover costs of administering the test(s) required to obtain your license (payable at the beginning of the test). The Issaquah Amateur Radio Club (IARC) usually offers two testing sessions during the year. The first course is usually scheduled in May, just after the completion of the Spring CERT class; the second, in December, just after the Fall CERT class. For more details see their website.
